Course Description

Detection & Control of Flammable Substances course is designed to familiarize petroleum industry workers with the hazards of flammable substances, precautionary measures for working in environments where flammable substances are present, and proper detection practices using catalytic detection instruments.

The information contained in this course is provided from a safety perspective only.  It does not address Occupational Health or Hygiene monitoring practices.  Such monitoring practices require additional training with other types of instrumentation to determine very low level concentrations of substances including gases and vapors with other toxic effects, such as H2S, benzene, toluene, and xylene.

The goals for this training are:

  • To provide petroleum industry workers with a basic level of understanding of the characteristics of flammable liquids, gases and vapors.
  • To provide petroleum industry workers with the basic knowledge and skill in order to protect themselves and others from exposure to flammable substances.

The training topics covered in the course are:

  • Introduction to Flammable Substances
  • Principles of Flammable Gases/Vapor Detection
  • Care and Preparation of Combustible Gas Monitors
  • Sampling Strategies and Interpretation of Monitor Readings
  • Control Methods for High Combustible Gas Readings
