Course Description

Collision Avoidance is a recommended refresher for people who have completed the Defensive Driving Course, or individuals who have five or more years of current driving experience as part of their work environment.


According to the Alberta Human Resources and Employment, motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of on the job fatalities.  Odds are 50% of people driving will be physically injured during their lifetime as a result of an automobile accident.  Odds are 1 in 5 people will be involved in a collision this year.  According to the AMA (Alberta Motorist Association) the average driver is involved in a collision once every 5 years.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Evaluate their driving performance compared to the average driver on the road
  • Describe the basic accident prevention formula
  • Assess specific hazards which threaten your safety on the road
  • Identify kill zones and how to avoid them
  • Identify six causes of collisions
  • Defines the defenses to avoid collisions
  • Understand the dangers of speed
  • Decrease your likelihood of an impact collision by more than 40%
  • Demonstrate methods to avoid a head on collision
  • Learn how to protect yourself from a backing-up collision
  • Pick safer parking locations at a shopping mall
