Course Description

Each student must provide their own side by side, all appropriate PPE and fuel.

The primary purpose of this training is for students to learn the operational limits of the equipment.  During the course students will undergo de-briefing sessions for each of the operational exercises they complete.  This de-briefing allows the students to discuss among themselves what they discovered about the operational limits of these units.



It remains the responsibility of the employer and the employee to make sure they are completely familiar with all specific safety and operational aspects of their SBSUV unit.

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Understand OH&S regulations
  • Identify which types of helmets meet government regulations and when helmets and PPE should be worn
  • Demonstrate the safe loading and off-loading of your SBSUV unit
  • Explain why loading and offloading are so dangerous
  • Demonstrate proper positioning for both operator and passenger in the event of a roll-over
  • Conduct a proper pre-ride inspection of any SBSUV using the TCLOC method
  • Display a basic knowledge of equipment, supplies, and tools for first aid and survival
  • Demonstrate SIPDE- Heads up driving technique
  • Explain the limitations of the unit when climbing steep hills
  • Demonstrate SBSUV driving techniques for turning radius, emergency stops in straight lines and curves, lateral steering and backing up
  • Safely maneuver over small obstacles with your SBSUV
  • Execute and Emergency Measures procedure if you get a unit stalled on a hill
  • Explain the different types of traction found when climbing hills
  • Explain how to properly pack loads onto SBSUVs for safe transport
  • Explain the depth to which these units can traverse through water
  • Describe general rules for operation of SBSUV and off-road etiquette


This course has been developed by reviewing the latest safety and performance information available at the time of development.  Students are required to write and examination using the resources provided and earn a minimum score of 70% to achieve certification.
